Match Summary: Chelsea defeats Benfica 4-1 in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup

CHELSEA OVERCOMES BENFICA WITH A 4-1 VICTORY TO REACH CLUB WORLD CUP QUARTERFINALS AFTER DRAMATIC CLASH

Chelsea secured their place in the FIFA Club World Cup Quarterfinals with a thrilling 4-1 win over Benfica, in a match full of drama — most notably a two-hour suspension due to severe weather conditions.
The game, held at Bank of America Stadium in North Carolina, started evenly until Reece James broke the deadlock in the 64th minute with a clever free-kick from the far left that fooled goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.
Chelsea thought they had added a second goal in the 79th minute through Liam Delap, but VAR disallowed the effort for offside.

At minute 86, the referee paused the match after a storm warning from meteorological authorities, leading to a two-hour delay before play resumed.
In injury time, Benfica was awarded a penalty via VAR after a handball by Malo Gusto. Ángel Di María stepped up and scored the equalizer, taking the match into extra time.
Just minutes into the extra period, Gianluca Prestianni received a second yellow card for a dangerous tackle, leaving Benfica with ten men.
Chelsea quickly capitalized, scoring three goals in extra time:
Christopher Nkunku (108’),
Pedro Neto (115’),
and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (117’).
With this emphatic win, Chelsea advances to face Palmeiras in the Quarterfinals on July 5, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
