The Estadi Montilivi hosted an exciting start to the LA LIGA season on Friday, August 15, 2025, as Girona faced Rayo Vallecano. The visitors stunned the hosts with two quick goals in the first 20 minutes, scored by Jorge de Frutos and Álvaro García Rivera.
In the 18th minute, Argentine goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga committed a costly blunder after slipping while playing the ball out from the back. De Frutos seized the opportunity and slotted the ball easily into the net, before setting up Álvaro García for the second goal.

The 28-year-old Spanish winger kicked off his campaign in the best way possible after an impressive 2024-25 season, where he netted 6 goals and provided 3 assists in 36 appearances.
Gazzaniga: First Red Card of the League
Girona’s misery didn’t stop at conceding twice. Gazzaniga was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge inside the penalty area, forcing the coach to sacrifice forward Bojan Miovski to bring on a substitute goalkeeper. Notably, Gazzaniga had previously played for Rayo Vallecano on loan during the 2016-17 season.
